BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P RM SUBSTATION & METER METER Department of the P SUBSTATION & METER Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides engineering level technical support in the installation, operation, testing, and maintenance of all revenue meters and metering equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides engineering level technical support in the installation, operation, testing and maintenance of all revenue and IP meters and metering equipment and power line carrier equipment.
  • Performs on-site field visits.
  • Administers the transition from electromechanical metering to programmable, electronic metering.  Coordinates the implementation of new communication technology required for remote meter reading. Considers and analyzes new technologies and new innovative techniques.
  • Reviews new meters for application on the Hawaiian Electric system
  • Reviews and confirms the correctness of revenue metering installations by verifying schematic drawings, equipment ratings, load considerations, and proper metering applications.
  • Performs tests, analysis, troubleshooting and programming of all revenue meters and meter related equipment.  Establishes and maintains adequate meter test and maintenance schedules and records.
  • Provides professional engineering and technical support for power system operation and maintenance activities to maintain system integrity and service reliability.
  • Coordinates the installation of assigned projects.
  • Coordinates field metering implementation of new rate schedules, changes to existing rate schedules, and Demand Side Management metering requirements.
  • Confers with Engineering, Operating Departments, Customer Service, Meter Reading, manufacturers, and customers on proper revenue meter equipment performance.
  • Investigates, analyzes and takes corrective action on any faulty meter operation.
  • Coordinates the design of specialized, non-standard metering installations such as the integration of Independent Power Producers and consolidated metering applications.
  • Prepares operating instructions for new equipment, taking into consideration safety, efficient operation, and limitations of each equipment.
  • Prepares test procedures and manuals to provide instruction and guidance to personnel.
  • Plans, directs, and develops written reports on special tests or projects.
  • Supports renewable and green initiatives and smart grid technologies.
  • Supports One Company Substation & Meter Operations (SMO) across all service areas.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or equivalent experience. 
  • Thorough technical knowledge in digital logic, electronics, microprocessors, and electrical engineering fundamentals normally acquired through college engineering courses.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications (i.e., spreadsheets, word processing, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

 

Skills Requirements

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, schedule and supervise work.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for frequent or required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Effective supervisory/leadership and oral communication skills.
  • Able to think logically to resolve technical problems in the field under adverse conditions.
  • Must be able to work with people and be capable of assuming supervisory role when needed.

 

Experience Requirements

  • A BS degree in engineering may be substituted for four (4) years of experience.
  • Multiple (5-7) years of engineering experience working with revenue metering and metering equipment or IP metering, power line carrier equipment or Transmission and Distribution or Substation Engineering.
