The P EB ENTERPRISE DATA & ANALYTICS Department of the P ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE & PLANNING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 2 Management vacancies available. This position may be filled on Oahu, Maui, or Hawaii Island. (Role: PROFESSIONAL)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

The Data Systems Engineer works with large, diverse, and multifaceted data sets to assemble and integrate them into a standardized platform using state-of-the-practice ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) tools and technologies. They create data pipelines used by data analytics teams, data consumers and data-centric applications with a focus on BI/Analytics system optimization to maximize the use of data as an enterprise asset. This senior role is part of the enterprise analytics “hub” and leads the architecture and technology development of the Enterprise Data Analytics Platform (EDAP) and mentors teams to maximize the use of technologies and data models to solve complex business problems across Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaii Electric Light Company and Maui Electric Company (the Companies).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Data Engineering:
    • Creates data architectures for Business Intelligence (BI) & analytics systems (warehouses, data lakes, applications), developing logical and physical data models; building, managing, and optimizing data pipelines and then moving these data pipelines effectively into production for key data and analytics consumers across the enterprise.
    • Defines and manage standards, guidelines, and processes to ensure enterprise architecture alignment, evaluate data quality, and delivers data and code quality inspections.
    • Supports data analytics and Machine Learning for statistical modeling and provides inputs for complex Data Science and Big Data Mining projects across the enterprise.
  • Data Operations (Data Ops):
    • Utilizing Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), automation, and agile methods to design, develop, implement, optimize and secure the Enterprise Data Analytics Platform (EDAP), Business Intelligence applications and enterprise data frameworks.
  • Data Solution Management:
    • Applies data and/or domain understanding in addressing new data requirements, proposes appropriate and innovative data ingestion, preparation, integration, operationalization techniques and scalable solutions to optimally deliver effective solutions (Use Cases) and solve complex business problems.
    • Leads and automates processes to turn data into useable information employing coding and containerization.
    • Supporting and collaborating with other data professionals (developers, architects, analysts, scientists) to ensure optimal data delivery architecture and to ensure that data-driven applications are production-ready and adopted by the business.
  • Organizational Data Governance & Capability Development:
    • Coaches and trains data analytics community (such as data scientists, data analysts, business users or any data consumers) in data pipelining and preparation techniques to make it easier to integrate and consume the data they need for their own use cases.
    • Promote the available data and analytics capabilities and expertise to business unit leaders and other community of practice members and educate them in leveraging these capabilities in achieving their business goals.
    • Lead and or support ensuring compliance and governance during data use and ensure that the data users and consumers use the data provisioned to them responsibly through data governance and compliance initiatives.
    • Proactively monitors industry, functional, and technology trends, guiding business partners on emerging opportunities and new technology/product development and supports and maintains multi-year data analytic plans, roadmaps and strategy for leadership consumption.
  • Remain available for both scheduled and unscheduled work. Said work is occasionally required outside normal business hours and on weekends.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in data analytics, data science, computer science, management information systems, business analysis, business management, engineering, finance, statistics, or related fields (or equivalent work experience) is required.
  • Requires thorough knowledge in building and optimizing data pipelines and architectures working with large, heterogeneous datasets from multiple sources across the enterprise.
  • Understanding of distributed computing, cloud technologies with Azure experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Agile Methodology, DevOps, and experience leading cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Working knowledge of utility business, business and/or engineering principles & practices preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge, experience, and ability to design, code, test, troubleshoot, and implement programs, stored procedures, forms, reports, interfaces, workflows, batch jobs, etc. preferably using Pyspark or Python.
  • Strong knowledge of popular database programming languages including SQL, NoSQL, Dataverse, and others for nonrelational databases.
  • Thorough experience working with popular data discovery, analytics and BI software tools like Power BI, Tableau, and others for semantic-layer-based data discovery.
  • Knowledge/familiarity with SAP and SAP related products/technologies related to Business Warehouse or Analytics Cloud with working knowledge of daily processing, development, and Break/Fix support preferred.
  • Experience in commercial/open-source data discovery/analysis platforms for “Big Data” with preference for: Spark, Databricks ML, with thorough knowledge and practical experience using Databricks for Machine Learning/Data Science strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of statistical methods and data mining techniques (predictive modeling, segmentation, regression, etc.) and experience in working with data science teams in refining and optimizing data science and machine learning models and algorithms.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills and thorough Data Literacy with the ability to describe business use cases/outcomes, data sources and management concepts, analytical approaches/options and solve business problems with advanced analytical solutions.
  • Ability to communicate complex information to technical and non-technical audiences, facilitate multi-level briefings and superior presentation skills, including storytelling and other techniques to guide and inspire.
  • Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly and ability to learn new technologies on the job.
  • Communicates difficult concepts and negotiate adoption of new perspectives across the enterprise while mentoring teams and facilitating knowledge transfer.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Extensive (7+ or more) years experience in data management disciplines including data integration, modeling, optimization, and data quality, and/or other areas directly relevant to data engineering and analytics.
  • Several (3-5) years experience with project management, working in cross-functional teams with business stakeholders, in support of multi-departmental data management and analytics initiatives is preferred.
  • Electric utility experience and Azure, Databricks, SAP, Big Data, Cloud based architecture experience is desirable.
  • Data Analytics/product or industry certification is desired.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Data Systems Engineer [Req ID 8384] position is $115,900.00 to $150,600.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
