The P CS CUSTOMER ENGINEERING 1 ADMIN Department of the P CUSTOMER ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Director)
JOB FUNCTION:
Oversee and directs personnel to provide the highest performance in customer service (World Class Customer Experience), operational excellence, and financial results while providing new electric service (residential, small commercial, large commercial) for the island of Oahu. Represents the Company in working with various stakeholders (customers, developers, large property owners, government agencies (city, state, federal, military, Hawaii Public Utilities Commission). Including supporting the company’s emergency responses for storms, public safety power shutoff, etc. type of events.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee and directs personnel to provide the highest performance in customer service (World Class Customer Experience), operational excellence, and financial results while providing new electric service (residential, small commercial, large commercial) for the island of Oahu. This Includes directing the division policies, practices, workforce staffing, and 5 year capital and O&M budget.
- Develops, initiates, and manages division activities and programs to ensure Division and Company goals and objectives are achieved and satisfy the financial and regulatory compliance needs of the company, customers, and wide variety of stakeholders.
- Represents the Company in working with various stakeholders (customers, developers, large property owners, government agencies (city, state, federal, military, Hawaii Public Utilities Commission).
- Drives a culture of safety, employee recognition, and development through proactive leadership and example. Ensures adherence to safe work practices and standard operating procedures, while consistently reinforcing positive behaviors and addressing at-risk actions. Provides technical, quality, and safety, leadership by optimizing existing systems and collaborating with safety personnel to maintain compliance with federal, state, and, and company safety regulations, as well as industry best practices.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
- Thorough knowledge of principles of power engineering, transmission, distribution, generation, substation, and planning.
- Knowledge of the major elements of the electric utility business, especially in a regulated environment, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission Rules and Regulations, Bargaining Unit Contractual Agreement, Electric Service Installation Manual (ESIM), Health and Safety Manual, etc.
- Knowledge of project and program management standards and methodologies, including initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing projects, developing work breakdown structures, tracking progress and status, managing scope, mitigating risk, etc., typically acquired through formal training and experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Knowledge of emotional intelligence in managing and influencing individuals.
- Knowledge of general procurement policies, processes, responsibilities.
- Broad management and leadership knowledge to lead teams across different disciplines.
- General knowledge of practical pole and line, generation and substation construction.
- Thorough knowledge of leadership and change management methodologies and practices typically acquired through formal training (i.e. leadership training, , Lean Leadership, ADKAR Change Management, etc.) and experience.
- Working knowledge of other business process improvement and reengineering systems.
- Working knowledge of the union contract and managing union employees.
- Working knowledge of financial controls and regulatory requirements (i.e. SOX, PUC, etc.).
- Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications (i.e., spreadsheets, word processing, database management, etc.)

Experience Requirements
- Extensive (7 or more) years of supervisory and leadership experience.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in the regulated electric utility industry.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in building effective working relationships with business leaders, customers, and stakeholders at all levels. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Electrical Engineering (PE) license to provide professional level engineering skills, knowledge & experience is desirable.
- Master’s degree in business administration is desirable.
- Experience (2 or more years) in regulatory matters before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, or an equivalent agency with ratemaking jurisdiction for electric utilities is desirable.
- Experience in distribution power system design & construction, tariff and distribution standards.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Dir, Customer Engineering [Req ID 10455] position is $141,400.00 to $183,800.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
