BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The E 4S FINANCIAL STRATEGY, ENT RISK AND FIN PLNG & ANALYSIS Department of the E FINANCIAL STRATEGY, ENT RISK AND FIN PLNG & ANALYSIS Division at Hawaiian Electric Industries has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Manager Supervisor)

JOB FUNCTION:

Manages the multi-year consolidated budgeting and financial forecast process and assists in building out the consolidated earnings outlook process and the holding company budget. Monitors, analyzes and advises senior management on the company’s financial and business performance, credit metrics, capital structure, liquidity, valuation and other factors. Has a thorough understanding of the company’s businesses, strategies and financial results and projections and is able to communicate regarding these topics clearly and accurately, consistent with GAAP and within SEC disclosure guidelines, in order to support company spokespersons to the financial community and collaborate with a wide range of internal parties, including senior executives and the finance and financial reporting organizations. Integrally involved in business acquisitions, divestitures, and other corporate development activities. Supports the financial strategy, enterprise risk, financial planning & analysis, and financial reporting functions. Has extensive contact with the finance, financial reporting and investor relations areas as well as senior management and all HEI departments/functional areas in the conduct of his/her duties.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Budgeting, Forecasting and Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Manages the consolidated budget and multi-year consolidated financial forecast.
    o    Manages consolidated budget and forecast model.
    o    Responsible for the consolidation of budgets and forecasts and the review and analysis of the subsidiary budget and forecast submissions to senior management.
    o    Prepares budget presentations for HEI senior management and the HEI board of directors.
    o    Performs scenario analysis of forecasted results for senior management.
    o    Evaluates company liquidity needs.
    o    Plans and manages schedule to ensure timeliness of budget and forecast development and to provide sufficient time for senior management review and engagement.
  • Responsible for the consolidated earnings outlook process and provides timely comparative data and analysis on current earnings expectations and valuation implications.
  • Monitors and analyzes company credit metrics over time.
  • Responsible for the holding company budget, including results analysis and updates.
    o    Responsible for analyzing and advising senior management on quarterly departmental variances.
  • Maintains in-depth understanding of subsidiary financial status and key drivers and informs senior management of issues to watch/developing concerns.
  • Identifies opportunities and potential financial strategies to improve the company’s cost structure/financial performance and position. 
  • Develops and updates financial models to analyze business valuation and in support of corporate strategic analyses and initiatives.
  • Oversees the financial modeling work of and trains the Investor Relations Financial Analyst/staff as back-up for company financial model.
  • Conducts and analyzes benchmarking of financial and other performance of the companies.
  • Assists in analysis and development of presentations and reports regarding potential risks to the company and risk mitigation/management matters.
    o    Identifies and assists in tracking key risk-related metrics, and champions a culture of thoughtful and disciplined risk measurement.

     

Financial Communication and Message Development

  • Assists and supports the company’s spokespersons to the financial community (institutional and retail investors, rating agencies, and media).
  • Assists Investor Relations in developing responses to analyst and media inquiries.
  • Plans and manages schedule for quarterly earnings process to ensure timeliness of materials and to provide sufficient time for senior management review and engagement on earnings and messaging matters.
  • Assists Investor Relations with messaging development and preparation of financial community communications, including through drafting:

              o    financial news release

              o    quarterly earnings slides

              o    talking points, presentations and other communications to the financial community (analysts, institutional investors and retail shareholders) for meetings, webcasts and conference calls

  • Develops presentations on behalf of and to senior management and board of directors as needed.
  • Monitors analyst research reports and earnings estimates to ensure accuracy.
  • Supports development of additional investor-focused communications, including the Summary Report to Shareholders and the Statistical Supplement.
  • Assists in development of materials and marketing strategy for any promotions of the company’s dividend reinvestment and stock purchase plan or other efforts to raise common equity for company investments.
     

Maintaining Financial Knowledge and Ensuring Efficiency

  • Keeps current on financial and material operating activities of the company.
  • Assists senior management in information gathering, fact checking and verification of financial information and context.
  • Uses technology and process improvements to streamline and automate processes, capture efficiencies and strengthen company insight into company financial prospects.
     

Assists Department Management and Other Duties 

  • Helps administer department personnel matters.
  • Helps develop and mentor members of the Financial Planning & Analysis and Investor Relations teams to ensure continuity and to increase and improve knowledge and skills.
  • Leads or participates in special projects and other administrative activities.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in Business Administration, Management, Accounting, Finance or other related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of corporate finance, the principles of accounting and their application.
  • Successful passing of the certified public accountant examination desired.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office.
  • Proficient in use of Adaptive (FP&A and Financial Reporting platform) desired.

 

Skills Requirements

  • Strong analytical and conceptual ability with respect to financial matters.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadlines. Must be highly organized, self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to interact effectively with investors, senior management and peers at the holding company and subsidiaries.
  • Supervisory skills and the ability to effectively communicate and work with all levels of the organization.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Multiple (5-7) years of public accounting experience, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Several (3-5) years providing work direction or supervision of others.
