BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The E 4P CORPORATE TAXES Department of the E CORPORATE TAXES Division at Hawaiian Electric Industries has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Supports the Manager and/or Director, Corporate Taxes, with financial statement reporting for HEI and its subsidiaries, and in filing reports and returns required to maintain compliance with all tax laws. In this regard, the Senior Tax Specialist assists in the review of the tax work product and in the development of policies and procedures to ensure proper tax reporting in a timely manner and provides direction and guidance to Corporate Tax Specialists in all aspects of taxation for HEI and its subsidiaries. In addition, the Senior Tax Specialist provides technical expertise in all areas of taxation involving financial reporting of tax, tax and regulatory compliance and tax planning.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • FINANCIAL REPORTING
    • Prepares and/or reviews the income tax provision workpapers, which is the basis for determining the total amount of income tax expense recorded on the financial statements. Collaborates with the Manager and/or Director in evaluating the classification of income taxes between what is currently payable and what will be paid in the future, as well as what amounts are subject to uncertainty with regards to positions taken on income tax returns. In addition, oversees and reviews the monthly and quarterly preparation of the roll forwards and reconciliations of income tax accounts prepared by Tax Specialists or HEI subsidiaries.
    • Coordinates and reviews the preparation of the quarterly consolidation of tax provision and reconciliations, and the quarterly and annual tax footnote and financial statement disclosures in the SEC filings.
  • TAX COMPLIANCE
    • Provides guidance and collaborates with Corporate Tax Specialists in the preparation and timely filing of federal and state income tax returns, franchise tax return, state general excise and use tax returns, revenue tax returns, pension, other post-retirement and business-related reports.
    • Ensures timely and accurate payment of federal and state income taxes, revenue taxes, general excise and use tax, and other post-retirement plan taxes.
  • PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AND DOCUMENTATION
    • Provides support to Manager and/or Director with any tax initiatives, tax planning opportunities, and assists with implementation. Monitors and analyzes tax, regulatory and compliance development and tax law changes and performs and coordinates legal tax research in addressing issues arising from a change in law or company transactions. Manages the relationships with external auditors and external tax advisors and coordinates the production of requested documents, ensuring requests are met in a timely basis. Coordinates information gathering for revenue agent reviews; researches and initiates Company positions on tax issues. Reviews monthly forecast of tax cash flows for HEI and subsidiaries. 
    • Develops, updates and maintains documentation of tax policies, procedures and process controls in compliance with SOX 404 requirements. Implements procedures and process control changes, as necessary. Evaluates processes and recommends simplification and standardization procedures for tax compliance and tax accounting requirements. Implements process changes. Ensures appropriate tax accounting systems meets the needs of the department to comply with tax compliance and financial reporting requirements.
  • RATE CASE AND OTHER PROCEEDINGS
    • Provides utilities with witness support for rate case and other proceedings as requested.
  • OTHER DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Business degree is required. Advanced degree in tax, finance and/or law is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of accounting; normally acquired through advanced college level accounting courses. Professional certification of Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Masters of Taxation, Masters of Accounting, or Masters of Business Administration strongly preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state income taxes, and all other taxes associated with doing business (payroll, excise/use, etc.). 
  • Thorough knowledge of tax-related software applications for compliance, provision, spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting for income taxes and financial reporting requirements as it relates to taxes.

  • Analytical, conceptual and technical skills to produce legal memoranda analyzing and discussing tax and related financial impact of various proposed and real transactions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals at all levels within and outside company using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information discreetly and professionally.

 

Experience Requirements

  • 7-10 years of corporate or public accounting experience with at least half the time in the tax compliance and/or research area. 
  • 1-3 years of supervisory/leadership experience preferred.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the HEI - Senior Tax Specialist [Req ID 9629] position is $104,000 to $129,900. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
