BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P BM STANDARDS ENGINEERING Department of the H ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Under the general direction of the Principal Technical Services Engineer, directs and reviews the standards development, design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction, operations and maintenance programs of HECO, MECO and HELCO.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares work programs for and leads, instructs, coordinates and directs assigned staff in their performance of the following assignments:
    • Prepares engineering and construction standards and related engineering work in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations and appropriate industry standards.
    • Prepares material, equipment and construction specifications for use in the Company’s Energy Delivery System.
    • Evaluates and makes recommendations of new materials, equipment, processes and technologies for use in the Energy Delivery Systems of HECO, MECO and HELCO.
    • Provides technical information and consultation services to the engineering, construction, operations and maintenance personnel at HECO, MECO and HELCO.  Conducts and/or arranges technical training and information briefings.
    • Conducts engineering studies and prepares reports.
    • Conducts or arranges for research and development, as required, applicable to the Company’s Energy Delivery System.
  • Reviews and approves standards, specifications, plans, designs, layouts, design calculations and other related engineering work.
  • Researches, coordinates and directs complex or novel technical assignments expected to result in new or improved engineering designs or construction practices or standards.  Serves as a technical consultant to the Division, the Engineering Department, other HECO departments, MECO and HELCO.
  • Meets, discusses and coordinates with parties inside and outside of Company to maintain/expedite progress on projects and programs.  Performs site inspections as necessary.
  • Conducts, reviews and approves engineering and economic studies and makes recommendations on proper course of action.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, normally acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of standards development, engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility Energy Delivery facilities normally acquired through extensive relevant professional engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Working knowledge of City, State and Federal laws, regulations and procedures and industry standards as related to electric utility energy delivery facilities and activities.
  • A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school or equivalent.
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communications skills and interpersonal skills, in order to work effectively with all levels of the company, with outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups and customers.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and conceptual skills to manage simultaneously a variety of projects, programs and assignments.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues.  Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license to complete site inspections.  Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Extensive (8+ years) relevant professional engineering experience in the development of engineering and construction standards for the company’s transmission, distribution, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the LEAD TECHNICAL SVCS ENGINEER [Req ID 8313] position is 103,500.00 to 134,400.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
