BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:
The P SD DEMAND RESPONSE Department of the P CUSTOMER ENERGY RESOURCES OPERATIONS Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. This position may be filled on Oahu, Maui, or Hawaii Island. (Role: Manager Supervisor)
JOB FUNCTION:
Leads the Customer Energy Resources (CER) technology implementation and operations for the Hawaiian Electric Companies (Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaii Electric Light). Responsible for the operations and engineering of the Distributed Energy Resources (DER), Demand Response (DR), and grid services programs. Responsible for the research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects for CER.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides lead engineering for CER business process implementation for existing and future programs. Responsible for accepting new systems and system updates prior to release to operations.
- Provides technical expertise, work direction and review. Responsible for solving CER technical needs for all CER program and related activities. Oversees all the work of engineering and IT staff, consultants and third-party vendors supporting CER technology.
- Supervises assigned personnel, including recruiting, setting and communicating performance standards, mentoring, coaching, and training and development. Sets and communicates deliverable standards, manages the engineering budget, and monitors progress and final deliverables.
- Lead all engineering efforts to integrate and optimize the function, utility and application of CER within the Hawaiian Electric Companies. Supports regulatory filings and budgetary requirements for CER programs and CER operations as required, including rate case.
- Keeps abreast of CER industry trends, communications protocols, and other new CER technologies and standards. Conducts research, development and demonstration utilizing EPRI and National Labs and actively pursues demonstration of customer-sited applications of emerging DR electro-technologies.
- Develops and presents technical and program information at seminars, conferences, engineering meetings, trade group meetings, etc. Develops technical articles for publication in trade magazines, company publications, and professional literature. Participates and/or chairs task forces and committees both inside and outside the Company.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
- Other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
- Electrical or Mechanical or other engineering discipline degree (Bachelor of Science or Master of Science) from an ABET-accredited college or university is required. Relevant equivalent experience which demonstrates detailed knowledge of the application of engineering theories and principles that are pertinent to the Job Responsibilities may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
- Detailed knowledge of electrical power systems (utility and in-building systems), solar (PV), battery systems, emergency generator systems, HVAC equipment and systems, control systems, data acquisition, remote communications and metering.
- State of Hawaii professional engineering license is preferred.
- Utility knowledge with specialization in DER and DR is preferred.
Skills Requirements
- Must have or be able to qualify for State of Hawaii driver’s license in order to travel to customer sites as needed. Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions consistent with the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
- Must be a self-starter with a clear ability to research, plan, organize, execute, and report on work with little supervision.
- Ability to perform independent research and work in a creative, innovative, and motivated fashion.
- Supervisory and leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals frequently dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issues. Ability to lead and provide strategy and direction to various work teams.
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive issues using tact, courtesy, and discretion. This skill must be displayed under demanding conditions in the field and over the telephone.
- In-depth analytical, organizational, planning, and conceptual skills to handle multiple projects, programs, and priorities concurrently.
- Effective oral, written, listening and platform skills to communicate with all levels inside and outside of the organization.
Experience Requirements
- Extensive (7-10 or more years) of relevant engineering experience, including management of major enterprise-level engineering and information technology related projects. Experience in transmission and distribution engineering is desired.
- Multiple (3-5 or more years) of relevant DR/DER program engineering experience preferred.
- Supervisory experience and/or experience leading cross-functional project teams is strongly required.
