BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P EO TELECOMMUNICATIONS - OPERATIONS Department of the P TELECOMMUNICATION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

  • Provides engineering level technical support in the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Communications, Energy Management System (EMS) and the computer/electronic equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

50%

  • Provides engineering level support to the Communications Section for the installation and maintenance of respective equipment.  Performs on-site field work.
  • Able to consult, identify, evaluate, design, architecture, and implement to create solutions for existing and future projects that will assist Telecom integration with the NOSC to assist in monitoring Telecom assets: Primarily using SolarWinds in conjunction with ServiceNow.
  • Conduct investigations and work with field personnel, contractors, or vendors to resolve equipment problems.  Must be able to supervise bargaining employees as required. Follow up to assure proper resolution of problems with engineering, contractors, and vendors.
  • Assures the proper and complete integration of new types of equipment into the system; including training, spare parts, test equipment, safety, and creating maintenance, operational procedures, and job aids.
  • Prepare and submit studies and engineering requests as needed to resolve problem areas identified through reviewing maintenance and test reports.  Follow up to assure satisfactory implementation and completion of recommended actions.
  • Establish technical documentation to define the preventive maintenance programs.  Update the procedures as required to meet the requirements of new or upgraded equipment with particular emphasis on safety of personnel.
  • Maintain working database or software storage of working circuits, circuit layout records (CLRs) in accordance with Telecom Engineering record standards and naming conventions, utilizing Net Terrain or a similar on-line storage source that can be accessed by all.
  • Assist Supervisor with administrative duties such as budget, meetings, updates, reports, as-built updates, and training for section personnel.  Participate as an instructor when qualified. Substitute for Communications Supervisor when needed.  Must be available for emergency calls at all times.

  • Provides engineering level technical support in the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Energy Management System and other computer/electronic equipment. 
  • Runs diagnostic routines and analyzes system malfunctions on front end processors, modems, computer peripherals, remote terminal units, generator control units, generator control panels, transducers, recorders, power supplies, watt-hour meters, relays and other equipment pertaining to the EMS system.
  • Recommends and implements equipment modifications.  Compile performance data and performs failure analysis to improve equipment reliability.
  • Develops and reviews test, troubleshooting, alignment, and calibration procedures and analyzes and evaluates test data.
  • Develops diagnostics and implements hardware test equipment for digital printed circuit boards.

  • Coordinates work with other divisions, departments, customers, and manufacturers. Assists engineering departments in special projects.
  • To keep abreast on new technological advancements while being able to apply this new technology into the existing EMS and Communication structure.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough working knowledge of digital logic, electronics, electrical engineering fundamentals, and microprocessor based technology normally acquired through college level courses, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of communications systems fundamentals; and computer operating system firmware strong computer skills including Microsoft Office applications, including Windows Server, Windows Active Directory, Linux, VM Ware, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, ASA Firewalls, Nokia SR OS, and Cisco XR and XE operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of SolarWinds and ServiceNow for developing physical and logical network topologies for existing and future network infrastructures.
  • Working knowledge of local area networks (LAN), MPLS, wireless communication equipment, PLTE, Microwave, antennas, microphones, consoles, interconnecting cables and electronic interference suppressors, Transfer/Trip Teleprotection Circuits, Remote Terminating Units, analog and digital radio, microwave and fiberoptic technology, etc are desirable.
  • Current Cisco certification and Nokia Network Routing Specialist (NRS) certifications are desirable
  • FCC License is also desirable.

  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.  Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.
  • Ability to assume a supervisory role for on-site field work.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Multiple (5-7) years of engineering experience working with telecommunications equipment, digital and electronic computer, and control systems, with a basic minimum of three years.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the TECHNICAL ENGINEER [Req ID 9052] position is $96,000.00 to $122,500.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
