BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The M AB BUDGET Department of the P SR VP CFO Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Responsible for the preparation, coordination and monitoring of Maui Electric Power Supply department’s annual operating and capital budget, including monthly updates and other financial and statistical reports to management.  Ensures proper accounting treatment and recordation of costs.  Supports regulatory filings.

Provides companywide support for the operation, maintenance, enhancement, and control of the budget system software.  Assures the integrity of the financial system’s database.  Provides instruction to system users in coordination with the budget process and timetable.  Coordinates and provides testing, documentation, user training, and helps users of the budget system to access and interpret information from the system.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for preparing, coordinating, analyzing, and monitoring Power Supply’s capital and operating budgets and updates.  Analyzes and meets financial and statistical information needs of various users through data obtained from the Company’s budget system, enterprise system, and other sources.  Monitors and updates weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and briefing materials as necessary, including PowerPoint presentations.  Provides technical and analytical support to the department.
  • Maintains the financial system tables and options to ensure integrity of the database.  Works with Hawaiian Electric ISD and other system administrators to resolve problems encountered by users with respect to the financial system, and test software enhancements, new releases and upgrades.  Recommends changes to improve processing.  Responsible for testing and evaluation of software updates, documenting procedures, and ensuring that users are kept current with access to and use of latest versions of software.  Responsible for coordinating annual Company planning and budget processing schedule.
  • Serves as an expert resource to management by providing financial work papers, exhibits and supporting documentation for special projects, regulatory proceedings, rate cases and special investigations.
  • Responsible for financial accounting duties including maintaining detailed general ledger account reconciliations related to clearing and preliminary engineering accounts in accordance with GAAP, FERC, NARUC, and other accounting requirements.  Also prepares accounting journal entries periodically.
  • Ensures compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 requirements.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities, as assigned, including any activities to prepare for such emergency response. Other duties as assigned.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, forecasting techniques, cost management and financial/statistical analysis normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of developing and monitoring operating budgets and forecasts.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel, Word, Power Point, business diagramming, process modeling, budgeting and forecasting software tools.
  • Working knowledge of utility accounting, finance, and cost accounting and ratemaking principles. 
  • Thorough knowledge of PUC application and reporting requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of SOX 404 application and reporting requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering, project management, and planning of power generating unit addition practices.

  • Financial analysis and problem solving skills
  • In-depth analytical, computational, organizational, conceptual, and administrative skills required for such tasks and preparing and analyzing forecasts, and carrying out department and company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Willingness and ability to provide training for continuous improvement of employee skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to multiple assignments in rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to accomplish assignments with minimal direct supervision; produce meaningful presentation of data analysis.
  • Ability to lead and provide direction to work teams. 

 

Experience Requirements

  • Multiple (5-7) years of financial analysis and accounting experience performing advanced work in the financial planning field.
  • Experience in utility accounting, preparing work papers and exhibits for regulatory agencies, desired.
