BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The M QS SUBSTATION & METER SUBSTATION Department of the P SUBSTATION & METER Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides engineering support in the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, training, project management, reliability and root cause analysis, and purchasing of substation equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides engineering support to the department for the construction and maintenance of the transmission and distribution systems.  Must be available for emergency calls at all times.
  • Conducts investigations, working with field personnel and Equipment Manufacturers to resolve equipment problems. Ensures proper resolution of problems with Engineering and vendors. Participates in Root Cause Analysis (RCA), providing data and work history.
  • Assures the proper and complete integration of new types of equipment into the system, including required electrical acceptance testing, training, spare parts, test equipment, safety, and establishing maintenance and operational procedures.
  • Prepares and submits studies and engineering requests as needed to resolve problem areas identified through reviewing maintenance and test reports. Ensures satisfactory implementation and completion of recommended actions.
  • Establishes the maintenance documentation used to define the preventative maintenance programs. Updates the procedures as required to meet the requirements of new or upgraded equipment with particular emphasis on safety of personnel.
  • Develops tool and test equipment requirements with the supervisors, including capital budget requests and cost justification. Investigates current test equipment developments and recommends new methods to accomplish division mission.
  • Implements specific environmental assignments such as Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracking and procedures, special test equipment procedures, and special project implementation.
  • Assists Superintendent with administrative duties such as budgets, meetings, updates, reports and training development for Department personnel.  Participates as an instructor when qualified. Substitutes for Superintendent during vacation, etc.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response and other Company activities as assigned.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough working knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering fundamentals, as applied to the electric utility industry, normally acquired through college level courses at an accredited college or equivalent experience. A BSEE will nominally fulfill the knowledge requirement.
  • Professional Engineer license strongly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems for spreadsheet, word processing, etc., software applications.
  • Understanding of the principles of operation and maintenance of substation equipment in an electric utility environment or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. 

 

Experience Requirements

  • 5-7 years of working experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems in an electric utility environment.
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited engineering school in Electrical Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or equivalent experience.
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline is highly desired in order to stamp drawings and designs required to obtain construction and building permits.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the SUBSTATION SERVICE ENGINEER - MAUI [Req ID 9001] position is $85,700.00 to $109,300.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
