BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The Substation & Meter Operations Admin Division of the Substation & Meter Department at Hawaiian Electric Company- Maui County has one (1)  vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides professional engineering level technical support to the Test Division.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for electrical acceptance tests required before major substation, transmission, distribution, or generation equipment is energized and performs follow-up tests before equipment is placed into service.  Performs on-site field work. 
  • Participates in the addition of co-generation units added to the HECO system by collaboratively reviewing equipment testing and results.  Analyzes, evaluates, and gives recommendations to test results and/or test data. 
  • Reviews and confirms the correctness of the logic for control, protective relays, and automatic transfer schemes from Engineering Design and manufacturers.
  • Provides professional engineering and technical support for power system operation and maintenance activities to maintain system integrity and service reliability.
  • Coordinated the installation of assigned projects.
  • Confers with manufacturers, Engineering and Operating departments’ personnel to ascertain proper or correct equipment performance.
  • Responsible for investigating, analyzing and taking corrective action on any faulty relay operation.  Establishes and maintains adequate test and maintenance schedules, records, plans, directs and develops written reports on special tests or projects.
  • Prepares operating instructions for new equipment and prepares test procedures and manuals to provide instructions and guidance to personnel.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough technical background in electrical engineering fundamentals normally acquired through college level engineering courses; or equivalent experience.
  • A professional electrical engineering curriculum in power systems and computer hardware options; or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications (i.e. spreadsheets, word processing, etc.)

 

Skills Requirements

  • Technical skills in electronics, communications and computer repair preferred.
  • Ability to resolve technical problems in the field under adverse conditions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.  Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.
  • Ability to assume a supervisory role for on-site field work.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Multiple years (5-7) experience in electrical engineering.

Pay Range: The hiring range for the Test Engineer,  [Req ID 8086] position is $90,500 to $115,400. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications. The hiring supervisor is Troy Hill.
