BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:
The H GC KEAHOLE, OPERATIONS Department of the H GENERATION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional Supervisor)
JOB FUNCTION:
Directs and supervises all West Hawai‘i Operations activities to optimize availability, reliability, and efficiency of the power generating stations while complying with all applicable safety and environmental regulations and laws. Provides leadership, supervisory guidance, training, and coaching to shift operations supervisors and operators in the operation and optimization of a variety of generating plants including steam, hydro, combustion turbine, and diesel. Leads and implements LEAN continuous improvement best practices to enhance and achieve operational excellence with a safety mindset.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directs and supervises plant Operations and assesses unit risks, evaluates unit capability, works cooperatively with system operation needs or requirements, and prepares Lock Out Tag Out requests to isolate equipment for maintenance.
- Supervises work of assigned personnel (including performance appraisal, teamwork and self-directed workforce, two-way communication, training and development, safety, and discipline). Monitors and inspects plant operations in the field and plant. Supports two-way communication to ensure a focused and well-informed workforce. Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce to support quality initiatives and Company vision and values.
- Works collaboratively with management team to establish priorities and coordinate operations and maintenance activities. Manages labor and non-labor resources to ensure operating equipment availability and reliability and control of station expenses.
- Enforces policies and labor contracts to achieve consistent and effective activities. Plans and coordinates shift schedules, vacation schedules, and training schedules.
- Ensures plant operations are in compliance with all federal and state regulations. Communicates all applicable regulations to assigned personnel. Responsible for management reports concerning the status of generating units and reports incidents concerning operational failures, equipment damage, environmental incident, or personnel safety.
- Interacts with all employees and other internal and external suppliers and customers in a positive, supportive and collaborative manner, to ensure the fulfillment of Company strategic objectives.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
- Familiarity with transmission, distribution and substation systems, and facilities.
- Operating knowledge of boilers, turbines, generators and related auxiliary equipment or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of power plant operations and maintenance or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications (i.e., spreadsheets, timekeeping, word processing, etc.)
- Thorough familiarity with applicable state and federal regulations/permits, laws, and codes regarding power plant operations.
- Thorough knowledge of union contract, Company policies, department policies/practices.
- Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
- Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
Skills Requirements
- Demonstrated supervisory/leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communication skills; conflict resolution skills; the ability to work with a variety of individuals; and the willingness and ability to train.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities and business needs.
- Ability to handle difficult or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.
- Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety.
- Assists with plant operations and attends staff meetings as necessary.
Experience Requirements
- Multiple years (7-10) of related work experience in an electric utility or equivalent.
- Several years (3-5) of related work experience in a supervisory capacity.
