BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P JC CHEMISTRY Department of the P ENVIRONMENTAL Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional) This posting seeks to fill at either the Analytical Chemist / Senior Analytical Chemist; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

 

Analytical Chemist

JOB FUNCTION:

Performs comprehensive chemical and physical analysis in support of Power Supply and Energy Delivery operations and subsidiary utilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs chemical analyses. Applies Environmental Protection Agency, American Society for Testing and Materials, and other standard instrumental to environmental, industrial product, and process samples for the determination of physical properties and chemical constituents.  Uses analytical instrumentation to include elemental analyzers, flashpoint apparatus, calorimeters, viscometers, gas and ion chromatographs, and spectrophotometers. Performs routine maintenance tasks and trouble shoots instruments to achieve optimum performance.  Prepares reagents and standard solutions; performs calibration and quality control tasks related to obtaining reliable results.  Performs calculations related to testing to convert raw data into final sample results.  Evaluates final data to ensure compliance with established criteria and takes corrective actions when needed.
  • Records instrument checks, testing conditions, calculations, final results, and quality control data in appropriate logs.  Enters results in the Laboratory Information Management System and prepares data packages for peer and supervisor review.
  • Performs sample preparation tasks to include weighing, extraction, drying, dilutions, and clean up to remove interferences.  Utilizes techniques such as liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extractions, filtering, solvent reduction, and column clean up.
  • Provides laboratory and client services support.  Performs assorted tasks related to laboratory operations to include SOP preparation, sample processing and accountability, waste disposal, and supply ordering.  Supports the needs of lab clients by providing sampling and analysis information, assisting with sample collection, and performing on-site analysis to support plant operations and overhauls.  In support of continuous improvement goals and objectives, participates in projects and studies to improve existing practices, procedures, programs, policies, and training curricula and materials.  Serves as a role model for continuous improvement behaviors.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related physical science with working knowledge of the principles of analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry including instrumental analyses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of quality control principles and practices and their application to analytical chemistry.
  • Working knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software.
  • Basic knowledge of job-related environmental rules and regulations.

 

Skills Requirements

  • Ability to operate, calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot a variety of analytical instruments and their software applications.
  • Ability to assess the quality of analytical results and determines a course of action if established criteria are not met.

Experience Requirements

Several (3-5) years of experience in an industrial or analytical laboratory with one year in an environmental area or equivalent preferred.

 

Senior Analytical Chemist

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides technical leadership for projects to improve laboratory operations and to solve problems in support of utility operations.  Serves as subject matter expert in electric utility laboratory science.  Performs comprehensive chemical and physical analysis in support of operations in Power Supply and Energy Delivery process areas for Hawaiian Electric and subsidiary utilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serves as the technical project leader for projects requiring evaluation and selection, application, and validation of methodology to solve operational problems and meet the needs for information. Assists, coaches, and mentors co-workers. Critically examines new and current procedures/practices/applications; offers recommendations for procedural changes that improve quality and/or efficiency. Serves as a subject matter expert in multiple technical areas of laboratory operations. Provides technical information and service to solve operational problems.
  • Serves as principle advisor to the Laboratory Director on matters related to analytical methodology, quality assurance, and capital item evaluation and selection; may serve as a member of the interview and selection team for new laboratory employees.
  • Performs sample preparation and chemical analyses.   • Knowledge of quality control principles and practices and their application to analytical chemistry.
  • Technical knowledge of personal computers and related software, laboratory equipment, and instrument operation and maintenance.
  • Advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry requirements established through environmental standards and regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of continuous improvement principles, procedures, tools, and desired behaviors.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Analytical Chemist [Req ID 9975] position is $71,100 to $88,800. The hiring range for the Senior Analytical Chemist [Req ID 9975] position is $87,400 to $111,500. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
