BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P ZL CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT Department of the P OPERATIONS PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Plans, coordinates and manages construction of various T & D electrical projects.  Provides work direction and oversees the work of external contractors and construction inspectors to safely and efficiently complete electrical projects.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages, directs and monitors on-site contracted T & D Electrical Work (underground and overhead transmission and distribution, underground residential developments and substation), to ensure compliance with required design standards, specifications, drawings, schedules, and safety standards.  Acts as the Department’s point of contact, and/or representative, for inquiries/complaints; and, as appropriate and formally or informally, ensures contractor complies. 
  • Plans, acquires/arranges necessary Holdoffs, Limited Holdoffs and other electrical clearances for assigned projects.
  • Reviews construction contract packages making recommendations relating to the constructability of the project by resolving design, bid, and field problems.  Advises contractors on construction methods.  Reviews and approves invoices for accuracy.  Continually reviews bidding procedures to maximize costs and efficiencies.  Continually reviews contracting and/or bidding procedures to identify opportunities for costs savings, efficiencies, etc.
  • Maintains project daily records and prepares incident and other project reports to maximize overall performance of the work group.  Attends contracting and project meetings.
  • Plans, schedules and conducts meetings (including safety, training, informational, etc.) to encourage/foster lines of communication between various levels of the workforce and to maintain, increase and/or improve workforce knowledge and skills; manages performance of employees, trains and develops personnel towards an effective and skilled workforce.
  • Interacts with employees and other internal and external suppliers and customers in a positive, supportive and collaborative manner to ensure their fulfillment of company strategic objectives.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of T & D electrical construction methods and the ability to apply this knowledge in the management of  T & D electrical construction sites.
  • Thorough knowledge of hold-off procedures.  Must be able to qualify to accept and return holdoffs, limited holdoffs, and electrical work clearances on electrical facilities.
  • Working knowledge of Hawaii construction laws, construction contracting, scheduling, estimating and cost tracking.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA and HECO safety and construction standards and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as; spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

  • Demonstrated skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide work direction to contractors.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to work with and influence contractors and consumers.
  • Ability to handle difficult or sensitive challenges while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding field environment and to handle problems as they arise.
  • Effective process management skills to organize resources and activities in order to improve and integrate work processes.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills to multitask.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.  Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Extensive (7 or more years) experience in the construction of overhead, underground, and/or substation electrical facilities.
  • Certification as a journeyman (T&D) is desirable.
  • Few (1-2) years of related work experience in a team lead capacity or equivalent preferred.
