The P YJ POWER SUPPLY PROJECT MGMT Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Manager Supervisor)



Plans, directs, manages and controls the functions and activities of the division to manage major projects for Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui Electric Company and Hawaii Electric Light Company from inception through budgeting, permitting, regulatory approvals, design, equipment and material procurement, construction, and commercial operation. Projects will include deactivation, reactivation and decommissioning activities for identified Hawaiian Electric Co. generating units.  Support planning and execution of deactivation of units also identified for Maui Electric Co. and Hawaii Electric Light Co.  Based on Enterprise Project Management Organization framework, establish the specific Project Management practices and coordination expectations that should be practiced across all areas of Power Supply. Directs the use of project information systems to document, maintain, analyze and report Power Supply project and portfolio data.



  • Plans and manages functions and activities of the Division and its personnel in managing major power generation, unit deactivation/reactivation and decommissioning projects to meet Company goals and objectives.
  • Develop strategies and sets priorities for Division.  Develop, implement and administer policies and procedures to support Division’s mission and departmental and corporate policies/plans.
  • Responsible for the implementation and administration of project and portfolio standards in conjunction with enterprise guidance provided by the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO). Provides standards and process guidance for all projects within the Power Supply process area.
  • Supervises and administers divisional personnel matters including project skills development; performance appraisals and interviews; recognition of employee achievements; guidance and support; and disciplinary actions.
  • Develops and manages division financial forecast and budget.  Uses project and portfolio performance data to measure and improve project/portfolio performance.
  • Models behaviors consistent with Company values.  Works with others to accomplish goals and objectives and maintain improvement in practices and procedures.
  • Promotes teamwork, reinforces and mentors subordinates in the application of improvement tools, techniques, and behaviors to expose and eliminate waste from daily work assignments.
  • Effectively applies the Daily Management System methods to continuously improve the safety, quality, speed, timeliness, and cost of all work processes within assigned span of control.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.



Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering normally acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of project engineering, project management and construction associated with electric utility facilities and systems normally acquired through extensive professional engineering experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of project management, including matrix management, financials and standards and methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and procedures as related to specific projects.
  • Working knowledge of PC/mainframe systems and related software applications, i.e., word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Knowledge of power plant operating procedures, practices and policies.
  • Knowledge of HECO accounting systems and practices.
  • Working knowledge of continuous improvement deployment system, principles, procedures, tools, and desired behaviors.

  • Demonstrated supervisory/leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with all levels of the company and with outside contractors, consultants, governmental agencies, community groups and customers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill with business contracts including solicitation, negotiation, and management of contracts.
  • Demonstrated in-depth analytical and administrative skills for such tasks as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints, conflicting priorities.
  • Demonstrated presentation and platform skills for effective group presentations.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues.  Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence, motivate and persuade various groups or individuals.
  • Ability to develop, lead and mentor others through acquisition of new skills in the program/project management discipline and sharing these skills with others on a periodic basis.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.  Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.


Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or equivalent
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline
  • Multiple (10 years) of relevant engineering experience including engineering design, project engineering and project management of major capital projects
  • Extensive experience (5+) years of managing portfolios/programs/projects.
  • Extensive experience (5+) of power plant operations and maintenance.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification or equivalent is preferred.
  • Several years (3-5) of supervisory experience.
