BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:
The P IV PS RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE ENGINEERING Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: PROFESSIONAL)
JOB FUNCTION:
Head of the overall Reliability processes of the Power Supply Process Area. Ensures that these processes are developed, documented, and utilized to ensure continuous improvement and long-term equipment reliability at lowest overall cost to the customer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Lead and facilitate the unit performance monitoring and reporting program (NERC/GADS) at HECO.
- Work with Operation personnel to collect daily unit performance data across all HECO units.
- Ensure all entries are accurate and coded correctly.
- Populate the NERC/GADS and Generation Stats databases.
- Train applicable stakeholders on proper data collection, coding and reporting.
- Provide applicable extracts/reports to various stakeholders in the Company for various reporting needs such as:

- PUC mandated Key Performance Metrics on HECO public site.
- PUC inquiries for unit information (Run hours, cycles, etc.)
- Adequacy of Supply calculations.
- Rate case development and justifications.
- Benchmarking comparisons using the GADs database.
- EPA Green House Gas Reporting.
- Input for Insurance risk assessments.
- Unit and equipment health assessments.
- Pre-overhaul planning outage work-scope development.
- Unit availability and force outage information/status for Visual Management Boards, Department Goals, Metrics, etc.
- Lead the coordinated efforts of operations, maintenance, planning, and engineering personnel to implement the Maintenance Basis (MB) program to ensure that the MB database is current, accurate and relevant.
- Evaluate OEM & EPRI recommendations, current work practices and PdM program capabilities to establish and/or refine HECO-specific MB tasks.
- Coordinate with Power Supply and Generation Engineering project personnel to stay abreast of equipment additions, modifications and/or removals and affects the appropriate modifications to the MB.
- Coordinate with System Owners to gain approval for all MB scope modifications.
- Communicate all MB scope modifications per approved Maintenance Basis Change Request (MBCR) processes.
- Update the MB database as modifications are identified and approved.
- Coordinate with Planning to ensure all periodic maintenance activities specified in the MB are populated in the EAM system.
- Facilitate periodic reviews of the MB with the respective System Owners, Engineering, PdM, Operations and Maintenance personnel to ensure the specified tasks are accurate, relevant and cost effective.
- Collaborate with various HECO department personnel to support the MB process and all various sub-processes. Work with various plant personnel to ensure effective implementation of the tasks specified in the MB.
- Train the organization on the MB process and how to utilize the various software tools to access and analyze MB information.
- Provide MB database extracts to various department personnel in the support of Root Cause Failure Analysis, equipment troubleshooting, outage planning, etc.
- Act as the liaison between Technical Services and Planning to ensure that all work plans and scope for unit outages are communicated to the appropriate System Owner and Subject Matter Expert to keep them informed.
- Lead and facilitate the Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) program at HECO.
- Facilitates and guides the program for HECO Power Supply.
- SME of the ThinkReliability Cause Map process.
- Provides facilitation and process support for Operations, Maintenance and Generation Engineers on RCFA investigations/reports.
- Provides assistance, training support, participation and facilitation in root cause investigations for other departments throughout the Company as well as neighbor islands.
- Coordinates training and maintains a list of qualified RCFA facilitators.
- Tracks program metrics and follows-up on outstanding action items.
- Develop, implement, maintain and continually improve the Reliability Analysis process tools (work order analysis, equipment reliability statistics, etc.) and the procedures governing this process in order to glean critical information from the various databases to make informed decisions. Review and analyze various data sources using methods such as statistical analysis, trend monitoring, and on-site reviews to determine the effectiveness of the maintenance programs and identify areas for further investigation or improvement. Works closely with System Owners, Subject Matter Experts, Operations and Craft personnel, Engineering and others to conduct or coordinate a technical analysis of identified problems and initiate remedial action.
- Develop, monitor and report on key performance indicators to identify unacceptable trends and recommend improvement opportunities across multiple programs. Generate reliability reports and present findings to key stake holders on a regular basis to ensure they are kept informed.
- Support and contribute to the continuous improvement culture at HECO by proactively evaluating industry best practices and providing recommendations for implementation. Works with EPRI and other utilities/organizations to benchmark current practices. Keeps abreast of and evaluates the latest technologies, tools, techniques and processes within the industry for applicability to HECO. Assists with the implementation of power plant reliability initiatives and other Generation department related tasks as required.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of reliability, maintenance work management and continuous improvement concepts and processes.
- Thorough knowledge of Reliability Centered Maintenance analysis techniques and methodology and how it is used to develop an effective PM program.
- Thorough understanding of a Corrective Action Program and other related sub-processes (e.g. root cause failure analysis).
- Thorough knowledge of predictive maintenance technologies and process.
- Thorough knowledge of EAM (e.g. SAP) Work Management systems.
- Thorough knowledge of Knowledge Capture tools and techniques.
- Extensive knowledge of power plant equipment and systems, functions and failure modes.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, database programs, word processing, etc.
- Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and procedures as related to specific projects.
Skills Requirements
- Demonstrated leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with all levels of the company and with outside contractors, consultants, and other organizations.
- Demonstrated in-depth analytical and administrative skills.
- Proficient in creating and utilizing MS Access ad-hoc queries of various databases.
- Proficient in manipulating data using Excel.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues. Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy and discretion. Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to utilize reference materials, drawings, instruction manuals, and historical information.
- Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety
Experience Requirements
- Several (5-7) years in an O&M environment with experience in Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and Planning.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education and experience required.
